HENRY SCHOFIELD DIARY
Decr 3rd – fine
Taking boxes out of hold on deck, broke Snowden’s box and one of the sailors got very much hurt by a box falling upon him. I had the headache all day. Passed 3 ships, spoke the Welfare for Chile 21 days out. Going about 2 knots per hour. Playing at merrils[4]. For dinner, spice pudding and salt pork. Dancing and singing on deck.
Notes
1. Sandy: Thomas’s brother Alexander
2. From Henry Schofield’s account we know that one of the broken boxes was Tom Snowden’s.
3. Captain Henry Rose recorded the accident in the ship’s logbook:
Whilst lowering the Passengers Luggage down one of the Boxes fell out of the slings and struck John Hilling A.B. on the back hurting him severely placed him in the Doctors charge
John Hilling was 23 years of age and originally from Suffolk. Before signing on to the Mermaid, he had served aboard the Lady Milton.
4. merrils: another name for nine men’s morris, see Wikipedia
