Thomas Keir diary - 27 November 1863 entry [National Library Micro-MS-0837]

Friday 27th Nov 1863

Very calm this morning but a very
heavy motion. did not sleep well during
the night and when we got up there
was great confusion. the chests breaking
loose and pitching from side to side
in danger of getting our legs broken.
took some breakfast for the first
time this week. the wind soon
sprang up and the ship was easier
four sail of large vessels in sight
most of them beating against the
wind same as ourselves. took dinner
pretty hearty and feel better than I
have for the last three weeks. 9 P.M.
a beautiful moonlight night and good
breeze of wind, but still from the
old direction. ship’s course about west
she has been tacking today from west
to southeast.
