Sunday 27th – Came up with and spoke
the vessel at 2 P.M. the “Castle Howard” from
London to Bombay, forty fore days out, we have
been only forty one, we passed her quite close and
the Captains spoke with the trumpets. About
5 A.M. the vessel was caught in the tail of a
sqall, afterwards the wind shifted farther
aft and at 10 A.M. the studding sails were
got up. Our latitude at noon was 22°46’ south
the sun almost vertical, there is a fine cool
breeze from the east which makes it feel very
pleasant, we don’t feel the heat so much as
to the northward of the line. The sun set at
8h.32m P.M. and the stars were seen at 8h.45min
shipstime 1h.42min after Greenwich.
