Sunday 22nd November 1863

A beautiful morning, the sea a good deal quieter.  All in good spirits, with few exceptions. Spoke a steamer bound south. As near as I can guess, off the north of Spain. Passed a small schooner, another sail in the distance. Very calm, the ship going slowly. Sun set at 5.10 with my watch. A cloudless sky and according to my calculations, we are about 18° west longitude. I find that the sun sets at London at 4pm, making a difference of 70 minutes. Had public worship on the main deck in the forenoon. Our mess are all a good deal better and partook of dinner pretty hearty. 8pm a beautiful moonlight night without a cloud in the sky.
