Thomas Keir diary - 21 November 1863 entry

Saturday 21st Nov
It blew a pretty stiff gale
all night but slept pretty well
had some beautiful dreams
thought I was at home in old
Scotland with my own dear
Wife and made the happy father
of a smiling infant. but I
awoke and was tossing on
the stormy Atlantic. Was
almost regretting the step I
had taken. blowing strong with
occasional showers. the Ship
heaving very much. the
waves rolling mountains high
a good few of the passengers
sick still. I am a good deal better
salt beef and rice for dinner. Passed
two sails during the day going
in the same direction 9 P.M. Still
a heavy sea.

It blew a pretty stiff gale all night but slept pretty well. Had some beautiful dreams, thought I was at home in old Scotland with my own dear wife and made the happy father of a smiling infant. But I awoke and was tossing on the stormy Atlantic, and was almost regretting the step I had taken. Blowing strong with occasional showers, the ship was heaving very much, the waves rolling mountains high. A good few of the passengers are sick still. I am a good deal better, salt beef and rice for dinner. Passed two sails during the day going in the same direction. 9pm still a heavy sea.
