Thomas Keir diary - 21 January 1864 entry [National Library Micro-MS-0837]

Thursday 21st – Fine, same as yesterday,
a great many birds of different kinds, a few
of the pigeons were caught on the poop
Although the sun shines brightly the wind
is quite cold, and when on deck we require
to keep moving about. A beautiful sunset
the slight haze on the horizon made him
appear of an oval form, like a larger
yellow egg lying on the edge of the water
with the major axis parallel with the
horizon. The sun set at 3.52 Greenwich &
at 7.20 ship’s time The longitude at noon
was 52° east. Reading today the Life of
Wellington, his early career in western India
very interesting.

HENRY SCHOFIELD DIARY

21st v fine

Drempt that I sent a letter home by the steam packet on sea. I went to the end of bowsprit, saw a many birds & porpoises & whales. For dinner a pie made of preserved potatoes & beef, pork & pea soup. 9 knots per hour 52 deg Long. Passed a deal of seaweed, 3 Cape pidgeons caught. McClade[1] had his watch stolen.

Notes

1. McClade doesn’t appear in the list of assisted emigrants nor cabin passengers – another paying his own way in steerage?
