HENRY SCHOFIELD DIARY

16th v fine

Tom Earnshaw begun to be Captain of mess. I had a row with Mr & Mrs Earnshaw about George last night[1]. Made an exchange with [Bells?] for a collar 9d & a knife 9d. A man tried to raffle a pair of buffalo horns for 2 pounds.  Today we was 11 hours & 22 mins before London time, 6 knots. Dinner salt beef & rice. Washed my towel.

Notes

1.The Earnshaw family were friends of Henry Schofield.  They don’t appear in the list of assisted emigrants or cabin passengers, so were paying their own way in steerage.  Thomas and Elizabeth were travelling with five of their children: Thomas (18) who was in the same mess group as Henry, Mary (16) who would have been in the single women’s quarters, George (13) who would have been in the single men’s quarters, and Ann (12) and Henry (6) who would have been with their parents in the married couples’ quarters. See Thomas Earnshaw (1819-1885) profile on WikiTree, managed by Larry Smith.
